Built on Lived Experience
The Story Behind Brave Horizons
Dr. Alaina Foster understands military life from multiple perspectives, as a U.S. Air Force veteran, daughter of a veteran, mother of service members, educator, and leader serving military-connected families.
Throughout her career in higher education and humanitarian service leadership, she has worked closely with young adults and families navigating some of the most significant transitions of their lives. Again and again, she saw the same reality: many recruits enter military service with courage and potential, but without the preparation, support, and life skills needed to navigate the emotional, relational, financial, and personal challenges that often accompany the transition.
At the same time, many families are left trying to support their loved one while navigating an unfamiliar world themselves, often without the guidance, resources, or community needed to do so confidently. This is why Brave Horizons was created.
Brave Horizons exists to help newly enlisted service members and their families navigate the transition into military life with greater confidence, resilience, and support. Through practical education, relatable mentorship, and real-world guidance, Brave Horizons helps build stronger foundations before challenges become crises.
The mission is not to replace the support systems already in place within the military, but to strengthen the human side of the transition experience, helping service members and families feel more prepared, connected, and equipped for the journey ahead.
Dr. Foster built Brave Horizons from both professional expertise and deeply personal experience. She believes preparation changes outcomes, support strengthens resilience, and no family should have to navigate military transition alone.
